Costs and quotes

How much will my website cost?

Honestly, it depends on what the site needs to do. A focused brochure site for a local service business is a very different job from an online shop with hundreds of products or a site that ties into your booking system. Once we understand what you need, we'll send a written quote that spells out exactly what's included.

Why don't you publish prices on the website?

Because a headline price rarely matches what a business actually needs, and we'd rather not anchor you to a number that turns out to be wrong. A short conversation lets us suggest the right scope for your budget, which is usually more useful than a price list.

What makes a website cost more or less?

The main factors are the number of unique page layouts, how much is designed from scratch, whether we're writing the content, and any extra functionality such as online payments, bookings, member areas or links to other software. Moving a large amount of content from an old site also takes time.

Are there ongoing costs once the site is live?

Usually, yes, although they're often modest. Most websites need hosting and a domain name renewed each year, and WordPress sites benefit from regular updates and backups. We'll explain what applies to your site before you commit, so nothing comes as a surprise.

How do payments work?

Payment stages are set out in your proposal before any work starts, so you'll know what's due and when. If the scope changes along the way, we'll agree any difference in cost with you before doing the extra work.

02

Process and timings

How long does it take to build a website?

A smaller site can come together in a matter of weeks, while larger sites and online shops take longer. The thing that most often slows a project down isn't design or development, it's waiting on content and feedback. We'll agree a realistic timeline with you at the start and keep you posted against it.

What do you need from me to get started?

Mostly a conversation. It helps to know what your business does, who your customers are, which websites you like (and dislike) and what you'd like the new site to achieve. Logos, photos and existing content are useful, but we can work out the gaps together.

How much of my time will the project take?

More at the beginning and end than in the middle. Expect a kick-off call, a few review points where we'll ask for your feedback, and some time to look over the finished site before launch. Our remote way of working means most of it fits around your day.

Can you work to a fixed deadline?

Often, yes. If there's a date that matters, such as a product launch or a trade event, tell us at the start. We'll be straight with you about whether it's realistic and what might need to be phased to hit it.

03

Design and content

Do you design from scratch or use templates?

Every site we design starts from your business and your customers, not from a theme someone else bought. For brands that need something truly distinctive, our bespoke web design service goes further, with a design system built specifically for you.

Who writes the words on the website?

Whichever suits you. Some clients send finished copy, some send rough notes for us to shape, and some prefer us to write the whole thing. Good copy makes a big difference to enquiries, so it's worth deciding early and building it into the plan.

Can you provide photos and images?

We can source properly licensed stock photography where it fits. That said, real photos of your premises, your team or your finished work almost always build more trust, so if you can get some taken, it's usually money well spent.

Will the site work on phones and tablets?

Yes. We design for mobile first, because that's how many visitors will see your site, then adapt the layouts for larger screens. We check everything on real devices before launch rather than relying on a browser preview.

Can you work with our existing logo and branding?

Absolutely. We'll work within your brand guidelines if you have them. If your branding is just a logo, we'll develop the supporting colours, type and image style so the website feels like a natural part of your business.

04

Technical and hosting

Which platform will you build my website on?

It depends on what you need. Most business websites suit a custom WordPress build, because it's easy to edit and widely supported. Online shops usually run on WooCommerce or Shopify, and some sites are best hand-built. We'll recommend what fits, and explain why.

Do you look after hosting?

We'll recommend hosting that suits your site's traffic and budget and help get everything set up. If you already have hosting you're happy with, we can usually work with it, as long as it's secure and up to date.

Will I own my website and domain?

Yes. Once your project is paid for, the website, its content and your domain name belong to you. We'll hand over the logins and make sure the important accounts are registered in your name, not ours.

How do you keep websites secure?

Every site gets an SSL certificate, forms that are checked on the server, sensible user permissions and software kept up to date. We also make sure backups are in place, so there's always a way back if something goes wrong.

Can you add bookings, payments or other features?

Usually, yes. Online bookings, payments, quote calculators, member areas and links to your CRM or email marketing tool are all common requests. Our website development page covers the kind of functionality we build.

06

After launch

What happens once my website goes live?

We keep a close eye on it in the days after launch, check that forms and tracking are working, and make sure search engines can find the new pages. After that, we're around for questions, changes and improvements as your business grows.

Will I be able to update the site myself?

Yes, that's the idea. We set up editing screens around your content and show you how to change text, swap images and add news or projects. If you'd rather not, we can make updates for you.

What if something stops working?

Get in touch and tell us what you're seeing. We'll take a look, explain what's happened in plain English and fix it. If the cause is something outside the website, such as a hosting or email problem, we'll help you get to the bottom of it.

Working with us from Newport

Are you based in Newport?

No. We're based in Wallington, and we work with businesses in Newport remotely. We'd rather be upfront about that than give a misleading impression of a local office. In practice, video calls and shared design links make the distance easy to manage.

Can we meet in person?

Most of our projects run entirely over video calls, and that works well for the vast majority of clients. If meeting face to face is important to you, mention it when you get in touch and we'll talk about what's possible.

Do you only work with Newport businesses?

Not at all. We work with businesses right across the UK. Newport is simply one of the places we're keen to help businesses get more from their websites.

How do I get started?

Send us a message through our contact page or give us a call. Tell us a little about your business and what you need, and we'll reply with some initial thoughts and, if it makes sense, a time to talk.

Still got a question? Just ask.

There's no such thing as a silly question when you're spending money on a website. Call us on +44 20 8686 4577 or send a message and we'll give you a straight answer.
